What is the Child Care Food Program?

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federal program (supplemented by the state of Vermont) which assists registered, licensed and legally exempt child care providers to serve nutritious meals to the children in their care.

This occurs through a combination of partial reimbursement for food costs and nutrition education and support from Windham Child Care Association. Statewide, Vermont CACFP sponsors over 882 family child care programs each month. These homes provide nutritional meals and snacks to over 7,228 children. Windham Child Care Association sponsors 55 providers serving approximately 600 children per month.

Who can participate?

Any registered or licensed family child care home or legally exempt care providers may participate. Windham Child Care Association is the sponsor for Windham and southern Windsor counties.

How much money will I receive?

You may claim three meals per child per day, one of which must be a snack. Reimbursement can come to $400 or more, depending on the number of meals served and number of children.

How will CACFP affect my taxes?

CACFP is not meant to cover the full cost of the food you serve. Any money spent over and above the CACFP reimbursement is tax deductible. If, for example, you spend $4,000 per year to feed the children in your care and CACFP reimburses you $3,600, the remaining $400 would be listed as a business expense on your taxes.
